Sport at GDPS
Our Sports team
At Great Denham we strive to be a physically active school that is committed to all forms of physical education, school sport and physical activity, with the aim of developing a lifelong love of physical activity.
To help achieve this, we have a fantastic sports team who are passionate and committed to
- increase participation opportunities
- motivate others
- organise competitions
- develop leadership skills.
Sports captains
The role of the sports captain is to lead, support, inspire and represent the school in sport whilst demonstrating all the school values. The sports captains will act as role models for the whole school, as well as their own family.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a positive role model during playtimes and lessons by promoting the school sports values
- Encourage pupils to participate positively in Physical Education, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA)
- Lead monthly sports team meetings with the sports ambassadors and feed back to the head teacher
- Assist in running of intra-school tournaments (refereeing, coaching, set up and tidy up, looking after family teams etc.)
- Assist in running of Sports Days
- Assist with lunch time sports clubs
- Assist with extra-curricular sports clubs

Our aims and vision for 2024-2025
Our Sports team aims and vision for 2023-24, created by our sports captains and vice captains are to:
- continue to provide varied opportunities at playtimes
- motivate children to increase their physical activity in school and at home
- meet termly as a whole team to reflect on the term and make a plan for the next one to be even better.
Achievements so far in 2023-2024:
Sports leaders
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 have the opportunity to apply to become a sports leader. It is a role which allows pupils to become role models within the school as well as developing their basic leadership and coaching skills in a range of sports. After their initial training, with the school sports partnership team, sports leaders are expected to organise, lead and support different sports activities throughout the year, in order to gain their bronze, silver and gold awards.

Sports Ambassadors
The role of the sports ambassador is designed to build the leadership skills of young people and as a result ambassadors (one girl and one boy per class) are empowered to take on the following roles:
- Be the voice for PE, school sport and physical activity in their school and community
- Attend monthly meetings with the sports captains
- Promote the positive values of physical activity and sport
- Be a role model and champion for PE and school sport
- Increase participation opportunities and healthy lifestyles for every
